A cracked lens, fogged dial face, or needle that no longer returns to zero are reliable signs a gauge needs replacement — don't wait for a complete failure. When servicing your filter, take the opportunity to check that the gauge port and any sealing threads or O-ring seat are clean and free of debris before threading the new gauge in. Hand-tighten only; over-torquing a gauge body into a plastic filter head can crack the housing.
